Glee to Celebrate Songs of Michael Jackson in Tribute Episode
Dec 6, 2011 04:04 PM ET

Similar to Season 1's Madonna tribute, the January 24 episode of Fox's Glee will feature 10-12 songs from Jackson's library. The episode is being fast-tracked in the writers' room now and is expected to begin shooting this Friday. Half of the episode will shoot before the cast breaks for the holidays, with the remaining numbers to be completed in January.

While creator Ryan Murphy has been teasing since the summer that a special spring tribute episode was in the offing, it took some convincing to assure the Jackson family that their late son/brother/father would be honored appropriately. Now, they have given their enthusiastic support.

You can get a taste of what's to come in tonight's "Sectionals" episode, which features several classic Jackson family numbers. Finn, Puck, Blaine and Mike sing "Man in the Mirror;" Tina, Kurt and Mike take the lead on The Jackson 5's "ABC;" and Artie, Blaine and Sam do their rendition of Janet Jackson's "Control." According to Ryan, the "kids" had such a fun time performing these MJ numbers, as well as "Thriller" in last year's Super Bowl episode, that he made an extra effort to seal the Jackson tribute deal before the end of 2011. Now he says the cast is flooding him with requests to sing their fave Jackson numbers.

Glee has purposely avoided such splashy episodes this season as part of a renewed commitment to focus on story over spectacle. But if there was ever a reason to break that moratorium, the songbook of Michael Jackson is probably the greatest.

Glee Tackling Michael Jackson Songbook: 5 Songs the Show Must Cover (and 5 to Avoid)

That special tribute episode of Glee that Ryan Murphy has been been hinting at since last summer has been greenlit — and it’s set to air Jan. 24, according to TV Guide Magazine. Yes indeed, the students and faculty of William McKinley High School will be busting out their moonwalks and “hoo-hoos!” as the show begins filming an installment later this week built around the Michael Jackson songbook.

Since last night’s Jackson Family medley at Sectionals was a bit of a mixed bag, I thought I’d take the liberty of suggesting five songs the show absolutely must tackle, and five that should be avoided at all costs. Check out my picks below, then hit the comments to brainstorm your own list!

Should Do
“Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”: I’m envisioning a tense duet between frenemies Rachel and Mercedes, perhaps?
“Leave Me Alone”: Because Kurt needs a solo that’s not Broadway, or a dreary ballad. How ’bout this one?
“Scream”: Oh my god can’t believe what I saw when I turned on the TV this evening/ Santana combusted, a move it got busted…
“I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”: Imagine this one coming to life as a “Like a Virgin”-esque montage featuring most of our main couples in romantic settings.
“Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)”: Send the whole cast to Booty Camp to provide solid backup for a Mike-Brittany dance-off!

Should Not Do
“P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)”: Especially if Shelby sings it to Puck. Yuck. (Update: Thanks for pointing out Artie sang this one back in Season 2, but again, I don’t want to hear Shelby singing this to Puck. It will not stand.)
“Ben”: We don’t need to know about the rat infestation at the McKinley cafeteria
“Earth Song”: Unless Ryan Murphy is planning to surprise us with special guests Haley Reinhart and Melanie Amaro
“Heal the World”: Just no.
“I’ll Be There”: Just seems a little too obvious and a little too dreary. Keep it in the closet!

Michael Jackson to get Glee treatment after King of Pop's relatives give approval
WENN The Daily Telegraph December 08, 2011 7:10PM

MICHAEL Jackson's relatives have given their approval for Glee bosses to make a tribute episode.

Co-creator Ryan Murphy has received the Jackson family's "enthusiastic support" after convincing them the show would serve as a respectful homage to the late icon.

The special instalment, due to air in the US on January 24 next year, will feature 10 to 12 of Jackson's classic songs.

The cast of the hit TV musical previously paid tribute to Jackson by recreating his Thriller video on a school football field, while also covering Man In The Mirror and the Jackson 5's hit ABC.

'Glee': Michael Jackson Tribute Episode Details Revealed
by Chris Harnick, posted Dec 13th 2011 2:15PM

Everybody is getting a piece of Michael Jackson when 'Glee' pays tribute to the late King of Pop on the Jan. 24 episode.

According to TV Guide Magazine, the cast will perform 12 songs from Jackson's extensive music catalogue, extending back to his time with the Jackson 5.

What's making New Directions so into MJ? Mr. Schuester, of course! After the former Troubletones express some regret about not being included in the Jackson family medley New Directions did at Sectionals, reliable Mr. Schue declares it Michael Jackson week.

"It was fun, man," Harry Shum Jr. told AOL TV about the Jackson family performance at Sectionals. "It was so much fun. It's always scary to do Michael, but I think we kind of interpreted it in our own way."

The Jan. 24 episode is still in its early phases of production, but TV Guide Magazine reports even the Warblers and Sebastian will partake in the Jackson tribute. Look for Blaine to take on 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'' and Finn and Rachel to do a duet of 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You.'

'Glee' spoilers: Michael Jackson deets and a Will & Emma wedding?
By Jean Bentley    December 13, 2011 3:54 PM ET

While "Glee" is gearing up to celebrate Christmas in the Dec. 13 episode "Extraordinary Merry Christmas," directed by star Matthew Morrison, the cast is currently shooting the upcoming Michael Jackson tribute episode.

Star Kevin McHale shared his excitement on Twitter, writing, "This MJ ep is gonna be crazyyyy. Can't believe we're doing this! Just did such a fun scene, can't wait for you all to see! ahhh!"

For those who can't wait until January to find out more about the special MJ installment, TV Guide has more details. Apparently, Mr. Schuester will host "Michael Week" after the Troubletones ladies get sad that they didn't sing the Jackson medley at Sectionals. The episode will include 12 songs spanning Jackson's entire career.

Specifically, Blaine will sing "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," Finn and Rachel will duet on "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," and the Warblers will also get a track. Look for more details to leak as the air date looms closer.

More Details on Glee's Salute to Michael Jackson
Dec 13, 2011 11:28 AM ET

TV Guide Magazine broke the news that Fox's Glee will end its season-long moratorium on tribute episodes for one very special homage to Michael Jackson. Now here are the first details of what to expect.

The January 24 episode will find Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) declaring it "Michael Week" at McKinley High after some of the former Troubletones express regret over missing out on New Directions' MJ medley at sectionals. Twelve classic songs, spanning the late artist's entire career all the way back to his Jackson 5 days, will be performed.

Even the Warblers and scheming Sebastian will get in on the Jackson lovefest. Blaine (Darren Criss) will take on "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," while Finn (Cory Monteith) and Rachel (Lea Michele) fans can look forward to a romantic duet of "I Just Can't Stop Loving You." Sounds like a Thriller!

'Glee' spoilers Michael Jackson tribute: Finchel duet, Darren Criss solo
Alison Nadaud, Glee Examiner
December 13, 2011

"Glee" will be back in a big way when 2012 kicks off. Following "The Proposal," fans can look forward to an amazing Michael Jackson tribute episode on January 24. New details about the show were revealed today.

The full song list for the episode has yet to be revealed, but we know that 12 songs from the King of Pop's library will be featured on the episode. How will the tribute tie into the storylines?

Will declares a "Michael Week" for the kids of New Directions as they gear up for Regionals. But don't think that the performances will be limited to the McKinley glee club. Sebastian and the Warblers will perform at least one song on the episode.

Lea Michel and Cory Monteith pair off for a Finchel duet of "I Just Can't Stop Loving You." Darren Criss fans will be pleased to learn that Blaine will finally get a major solo with "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'." And how can anyone sing that song without busting out in some serious dance moves?

Don't think you are alone in your excitement over the upcoming tribute. Both Lea Kevin McHale have been sharing their own anticipation about performing such iconic songs. Lea tweeted: "Off to the recording studio.. Singing a song by one of.. Or actually THE greatest artist of all time.. Michael Jackson!!"

Kevin also raved about the January episode on Twitter: "This MJ ep is gonna be crazyyyy. Can't believe we're doing this! Just did such a fun scene, can't wait for you all to see! ahhh!"

Despite, the music-heavy focus, don't think the plot will be lost in the mix. Lea Michele has promised some major Finchel moments to come when the show returns after the break. Further, this episode will follow Will's proposal to Emma. Hopefully, there will be some carry over with this storyline.

'Glee' spoilers: Michael Jackson tribute song list includes 'BAD'
Alison Nadaud, Glee Examiner
December 14, 2011

"Glee" will bring us what could be the biggest tribute episode to date on January 24. The cast has been filming scenes for the eleventh episode of season three all week. Tackling twelve songs from the Jackson library, it will be a big task to complete the episode. An inside source on the set of the shoot revealed a big song spoiler for the episode today.

William Keck will be on the set tomorrow with access to watch filming for one of the big performances. Without revealing who will be singing, Keck tweeted about the song and location for the shoot.

"I'm back to #glee set on Thursday for the #MichaelJackson BAD shoot in a parking garage."

There would be so many great options for this performance. It will likely involve several cast members, but who will take the lead? Puck would be an excellent choice but even giving the solo to Quinn would be a strong fit given the year she has had.

In addition to "BAD," three other performances have been listed for the episode. Here is the list as of today:

BAD by Michael Jackson, performed by TBA.
Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' by Michael Jackson. Sung by Blaine.
I Just Can't Stop Loving You by Michael Jackson. Sung By Finn and Rachel.
Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson. Sung by Santana and Sebastian.

The Michael Jackson tribute episode airs January 24. 'Yes/No' airs January 17.

'Glee' spoilers: New Michael Jackson tribute performance confirmed

Alison Nadaud, Glee Examiner
December 15, 2011

For the next two days, the "Glee" cast will be busy filming the upcoming Michael Jackson tribute episode. Airing January 24, the huge musical production will feature 12 songs from the Jackson library. We have already hard about a few of the solos and duets for the episode. But today, news of a surprising collaboration broke.

Lea Michele was eagerly awaiting a huge number today. After an extremely late night on Wednesday, the "New Year's Eve" star was back on the set shooting a large group number with some surprising singers.

"First scene up is a #NewDirections & #Warblers number! So excited!!! #GleedoesMJ :)"

Specific details about the group number have yet to be revealed, but it is possible that they will be doing "BAD." As reported here yesterday, an inside source from the set revealed that the cast would be filming a performance of the 1987 hit song at a parking garage today.

It seems that the Warblers will be playing a big role in the January episode. Just yesterday, Lea, Naya Rivera, Darren Criss and Kevin McHale were all at Dalton filming scenes for the same episode.

What do you think will bring these two rival glee clubs together for a group performance? Would you like them to sing "BAD" or another MJ song?

Glee's Michael Jackson Tribute Episode Song List Leaked
Author: Kelly West published: 2011-12-27 13:32:27

Among the things Glee fans have to look forward to is the Michael Jackson tribute episode, which is set to air in January. The list of songs set to be featured in the episode has been leaked. See which songs will be featured and who's singing what ahead! (Major spoilers!)

For those Glee fans who are eager to see how the cast handles some of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits, the tribute episode is probably high on their list of things to look forward to when the series returns next month. I’m personally more interested in Glee’s take on Grease!, which has been hinted at in these photos, but it’ll definitely be interesting to see how Glee tackles Jackson.

PerezHilton.com posted the leaked list of songs, which includes who will be singing them. Santana and Sebastian singing “Smooth Criminal”? That could be interesting...

-Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ – Blaine

- Bad – New Directions & Warblers

- I Just Can’t Stop Loving You – Finn & Rachel

- Smooth Criminal – Santana & Sebastian

- Never Can Say Goodbye – Quinn

- In The Closet – Brittany & Santana

- We Are The World – New Directions & Warblers
- Black And White – Puck

- Ghost / Monster – New Directions

- Beat It / Billy Jean – Warblers

- The Way You Make Me Feel – Kurt

- Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough – Artie

'Glee' season 3 spoilers: notes on Darren Criss, Michael Jackson, night school
Matt Carter, TV Examiner
January 3, 2012

We still have two more weeks to go until "Glee" returns with new episodes, but we still have some brand-new details worth talking about when it comes to what's coming up.

First and foremost, multiple sources have confirmed that Darren Criss will only miss one or two episodes of the show, and that producers aren't even bothering to write him off the show.

Meanwhile, Criss tells E! News that his character of Blaine has some exciting material coming up during the Michael Jackson tribute episode: "I thought that before I was going to leave, they might write Blaine out just to make things easier on everybody. Nope! Right before I left, Blaine had a lot of really cool things to do for the Michael Jackson episode. When you see that episode, I shot all my stuff in four days. It was quick! It was a shotgun of crazy, exhausting stuff and it was both a thrill—because you really wanna do justice to these awesome songs—but frustrating, because I wanted it to be perfect and amazing. So hopefully they cut it right."

To close things off, TVLine is reporting that the show is trying to cast some middle-aged students for a night school, which means that someone could be hitting the books around the clock.

 Full  Song List Revealed!
BY: Andy Neuenschwander
POSTED: JANUARY 07, 2012 @ 2:59 PM PST

They've done Gaga, they've done "Rocky Horror," and now the cast of "Glee" will be taking on the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

As we reported earlier, "Glee" has shot a Michael Jackson tribute episode and set it to air on January 24th... just a few weeks away! The idea seemed to stem from the use of a few MJ songs in the Sectionals episode of the show toward the end of 2011, when the cast performed "Man in the Mirror" and other hits.

The Jackson episode will be a big one, with a full 10 songs on the set list. Here's the full list of songs for the episode, via TV Guide:

1. "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" - New Directions lead by Blaine

2. "Rock with You" - Warblers lead by Sebastian

3. "Bad" - Artie, Santana, Blaine, Sebastian

4. "Scream" - Artie and Mike

5. "Never Can Say Goodbye" - Quinn

6. "Human Nature/Nature Boy" - Mercedes and Sam

7. "Smooth Criminal" - Santana and Sebastian

8. "Ben" - Finn, Rachel and Kurt

9. "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" - Finn and Rachel

10. "Black or White" - New Directions

It's an interesting list, and one that pretty clearly has to make some more obscure choices as some of the big hits ("Thriller," "Man in the Mirror") have already been performed on the show.

Also interesting is the fact that Sebastian has three different numbers in the episode. Chances are pretty good that we're going to see some Blaine/Kurt drama with him hanging around that much.

Catch the MJ tribute episide on January 24th on Fox. "Glee" returns on January 17th with the new episode "Yes/No."

Chris Colfer on Returning to 'Glee' & MJ Episode
January 09, 2012

In case you missed it, Fox's President of Entertainment Kevin Reilly had some very "cool" news for Gleeks this weekend. While a post-graduation spin-off has unfortunately been nixed, some of McKinley High's favorites will return for season four, and Chris Colfer couldn't wait to spill the details!

"Fans who were hoping for a spin-off are going to be very, very happy about it," said Colfer giddily of the revelation at the FOX TCAs Sunday night. Earlier in the day, both he and Lea Michele and Cory Monteith were confirmed to maintain big roles in the episodes following their high school commencement.

"I really can't emphasize enough that it really will be, kind of, the best of both worlds," he explained. "I really think it's going to be a lot of fun."

As far as the immediate future is concerned, the cast says they've almost wrapped the highly-anticipated Michael Jackson episode, and Kevin McHale tells us you can expect the upcoming show to hold up to the caliber of their Britney, Madonna and Super Bowl specials.

The homage to the late singer was a special one for Kevin, as he confessed he is "obsessed" with MJ. As a fan, McHale assures that the pop icon's music will be translated onto Glee with the love and care it deserves.

"They've done the songs in a way that I think people will really love it," he explains. "Some of them we stay true to who they really are, and some of them we kind of re-work a bit respectfully."

Glee's Michael Jackson Tribute: Who's the Villain, Who's Dueting, and Who's Warming the Bench?
BY MICHAEL SLEZAK

You can’t believe everything you read on the Internet — especially when it comes Glee spoilers — but you can trust TVLine’s scoop about the show’s upcoming Michael Jackson tribute episode slated to air later this month. That’s because our crack team of reporters caught up with several cast members at Sunday’s Television Critics Association bash to get the news straight from the show choir’s mouth:

Sebastian Will Be Startin’ Somethin’ | Yes, folks, get ready for Grant Gustin’s Sebastian Smythe to turn into a total terror, says Kevin McHale (Artie). “For this episode, it’s everybody versus Sebastian,” McHale says of the sneaky gay teen who previously tried to come between Kurt and Blaine. “He’s our first male villain.” What turns so many people against the carefully coiffed Warbler? “I do a majorly douche-y thing to one of the characters. So first off the fans are against me, and now the whole cast is against me,” explains Gustin with a laugh.

Santana Might Just Leave Some Blood on the Dance Floor | After Sebastian commits his bad act, “Santana comes to Dalton [Academy] and confronts me,” teases Gustin. “And then we go into ‘Smooth Criminal’ together.”

The Show Will Rock Without ‘Rock With You’ | Gustin says he’ll also pop up in a performance of “Bad” that features both New Directions and the Warblers, as well as a scene where the Dalton show choir covers a Jackson 5 number. But alas, the guys in the navy-and-red blazers won’t be doing “Rock With You,” as reported on a number of sites. “It didn’t get cleared,” says McHale, although it was in the script at one point, adds Gustin.

A Couple of Characters Will Beat It | Indeed, Jayma Mays and Jane Lynch confirm that Emma and Sue won’t be part of the episode. What’s more surprising, though is that Matthew Morrison’s Mr. Schue won’t get his MJ on, either. “I don’t [sing in the episode], unfortunately,” says Morrison. “But in a weird way, there’s a pressure [when you have to] sing a Michael Jackson song, so I was kind of relieved.”

Mr. Schue Wants the New Directions Kids to Remember the Time…When MJ Topped the Charts | “A lot of the kids in high school today know Michael Jackson, but I don’t think they really are influenced and affected by him,” says Morrison. “[Will wants MJ] to go down as one of the greatest performers of all time — and I think he will. [The episode] is about bringing Michael Jackson to a new generation.” In fact, look for Will to take to the blackboard with an episode-shaping question: “WWMJD?” (Yes, folks, that stands for “What would Michael Jackson do?”)

Sam Is Not Alone | Chord Overstreet won’t reveal much, except for the fact that the Jackson tribute finds Sam in duet mode. (That said, a credible set list from TV Guide pointed to Sam tackling a “Human Nature”/”Nature Boy” mashup with none other than Mercedes.)

The Way “Ben” Makes Chris Colfer Feel…Is Confused | Colfer says Kurt will deliver Jackson’s 1972 soundtrack cut “Ben,” from that horror movie about a boy and his rat. “I have no idea [why it was chosen], but I know it was voted the worst song in history by some group. It was about a rat, but we’re singing it about Kurt’s boyfriend,” says Colfer. “I’m not sure what the connection is! They didn’t [change lyrics from "Ben" to "Blaine"]; that would have been clever, though.”

Mike Chang Will Turn into a Dancing Machine | “Everyone gets to contribute in their own way,” says Harry Shum, Jr., whose character will tackle the Michael-Janet duet “Scream” (reportedly with Artie). “It’s going to be a fun duet,” he says. “And that particular song has so much anger and angst about all these things that have built up, and Mike Chang has a lot of pent-up anger he couldn’t express, so you’re going to see a lot of explosive dance moments.”

(Reporting by Matt Webb Mitovich, Michael Ausiello and Vlada Gelman)

On The Set: Glee's Michael Jackson Tribute Episode

The thunder's just stopped rumbling, but a storm's still a-brewin' in a chilly parking garage just outside the Paramount Studio gates on a gusty Hollywood night. Inside, oblivious drivers exiting for the evening pass choreographer Zach Woodlee putting the warmly bundled-up Glee kids through a rigorous routine. Having only just been introduced to their complicated dance moves, the physically drained troupe will be in costume and before cameras in less than an hour shooting their big "Bad" production number - the crown jewel in a tribute episode to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, that airs on Tuesday, January 31.

As the deafening prerecorded track plays "I'm bad, I'm bad/Come on/You know it," Woodlee, a recognizable face himself as one of the judges on Oxygen's The Glee Project, shouts his marching orders: "Walk, walk. Swipe, swipe, punch. Now swing! Ladies, you have to start backing up against the wall like you're scared." Woodlee separates Lea Michele (Rachel), Naya Rivera (Santana), Dianna Agron (Quinn), Heather Morris (Brittany) and Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina) from the boys in a dance-off pitting the New Directions against the Warblers. "I promise you this will work. Well... maybe."

This ambitious homage - which includes 10 of Jackson's hits, such as "Rock With You," "Smooth Criminal" and "Black or White" - is an enormous undertaking pulled together in platinum-record speed after receiving the blessing of the überprotective Jackson estate. "It's a different thing to do a posthumous [tribute] episode as opposed to dealing directly with Madonna, Britney [Spears] or Lady Gaga," explains exec producer Ryan Murphy. "Michael's kids are somewhat fans of the show, so the estate was lovely. In fact, they liked the writing so much that halfway through the planning they asked us to do another one about him next year." (Murphy has not yet confirmed a follow-up.)

When Woodlee gives the gang a quick breather, Michele cuddles with Darren Criss (Blaine) to keep warm, while Kevin McHale gets up out of Artie's wheelchair for a stretch and Mark Salling (Puck) lightens the mood by parading around in a red Cheerios skirt.

While the skirt will never actually be seen on Puck, Glee's costumers stretched their budget considerably, just as they did for their first-season Madonna and Lady Gaga tributes, decking out the cast in flashy fedoras, red leather jackets, sparkly rhinestone socks and gloves and other Jacksonphernalia. One standout is Chris Colfer, who as Kurt is rocking a black leather jumpsuit. "This is the closest I'll ever get to playing Catwoman," cracks Colfer, who has been entertaining his cohorts with his imitation of Meryl Streep as Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher.

But who was Michael Jackson to this cast of twentysomethings? Many were far too young (or even yet to be born) during Jackson's 1980s firestorm when Thriller became the top-selling album of all time. Like many of his cast mates, Colfer remembers his first "conscious awareness" of Jackson was "seeing him going from hospitals to courtrooms, which overshadowed all the amazing music." Echoes Criss, "Unfortunately for our generation, it was a dark time in his life."

"When I was in high school, there was definitely a lot of controversial stuff going on," adds Michele, doing her best to remain upbeat despite the gnawing pain of wisdom teeth soon to be extracted. "That's what I remember. But his best friends were Liz Taylor and Liza Minnelli, so he was always good in my book."
