What should replace Disneyland’s ‘Captain EO’?

Disneyland brought back the Michael Jackson movie, “Captain EO,” for what was billed as a limited run.

A year ago Wednesday (today), the 3D movie is still at the park. And Disney officials have yet to announce an end date.

The return of the 1986 film brought lines for a few days to the Tomorrowland theater, but crowds soon waned, said Kelly Johns, founder of Mousewait, a smart phone app that tracks wait times.

Fans waited overnight for the premiere showing. Read about the return of “Captain EO” to Disneyland.

During the first day, waits ranged from 40 to 90 minutes and spiked again over the weekend. But the lines now are just for those waiting for the 17-minute film to end so they can get into the theater for the next showing.  Read about “Captain EO” wait times and take a poll.http://ocresort.ocregister.com/2010/03/03/captain-eo-lines-usually-short-at-disneyland/36315/

Still, Disney revived the movie at other parks, including Epcot in Florida, Paris and Tokyo. The Japan park made plans to run it a full year until June 2011. Disney officials have yet to announce what attraction will replace “Captain EO” when it does leave.

We asked Twitter followers on @arounddisney what they want to see in its place.

TAKE A POLL AND SEE A VIDEO BELOW.

Some said they would like a “Tron”-related movie, although others noted that has already been done: A 3D clip of “Tron: Legacy” is part of Disney California Adventure’s ElecTRONica nighttime features.

Others want a Pixar-related movie.

“Since the Pixar movies have been very successful for Disney, I think a WALL-E attraction would be a welcome addition,” said Catherine Mims Yamaguchi of La Mirada in an e-mail. “The theme for Tomorrowland is the future, and WALL-E shows a desolate future with a glimmer of hope.”

One fan said she would like to see a stage show of “Tangled” or “Enchanted.” Another favors a “Lost” attraction based on the television show. Another wants “Mickey’s PhilharMagic,” a 3D film that shows at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World.

Several said they want something new, not a rehash from another Disney park.

“Whatever replaces ‘Captain EO’ should be a new experience,” said Tom Chivers of Santa Clara in an e-mail. “No clones from other Disney parks. I want to see something brand new. Not some old retread that’s past its prime.”

What feature would you like to see when “Captain EO” leaves? Tell us in the comments section and take a poll.

The theater is still full each time in CA and according to our insider (wink wink ), the captain would remain on the big screen until 2013. BUT changes can happen (as she said).

What’s next for ‘Captain EO’ at Disneyland?
February 22nd, 2012, 6:00 am ·  · posted by Sarah Tully

Two years ago, fans lined up overnight to catch the first showing of Michael Jackson’s “Captain EO” movie after a 13-year absence, thinking that it would show for only for a limited time at Disneyland.

But Disney has yet to announce when “Captain EO” will depart and what will replace it, said John McClintock, a Disneyland Resort spokesman. Thursday marks the two-year anniversary of the movie’s return to Tomorrowland in Disneyland. See a story about the return of “Captain EO” at Disneyland.

At the time, Disney announced that the “Captain EO” return was for a limited run, but officials never declared an end date. And they still haven’t.

Recently, employees at the attraction began handing out special “Captain EO” buttons to those in line for the movie at the Magic Eye Theater. But McClintock said the button handout is unrelated to the status of the show. The park had extra buttons and decided to hand them out.

Kelly Johns, the founder of Mousewait, a smartphone app that tracks wait times, said lines are rarely long for “Captain EO.” Usually, visitors have to wait a maximum of 20 minutes for the movie to finish before they can go into the theater, which fits between 500 and 600 people.

Last year, the Tokyo Disney Resort decided to keep “Captain EO” indefinitely. The movie also appears in Walt Disney World’s Epcot in Florida and Disneyland Paris.

Disneyland brought back the 1987 movie in 2010 following the death of pop-star Michael Jackson, the star of the 17-minute movie by executive producer George Lucas and director Francis Ford Coppola. After Jackson’s death, some fans asked for the return of the movie, which includes two Jackson songs and ran for about 10 years in Disneyland. Last year, we ran a poll, asking readers what they would like to see replace “Captain EO.” As of Tuesday afternoon, 2,054 had responded with the biggest number wanting “Captain EO” to stay forever. We’re reviving the poll below:
