Spike Lee Making Doc For 25th Anniversary Of Michael Jackson's "Bad" + He Talks "Go Brazil Go!" & More...
BY ASHLEY THOMAS | MARCH 28, 2012

Yesterday, I returned to my alma mater surprised and pleased that my small liberal arts school (College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA) had managed to bring Spike Lee to the campus. I also came with special instructions from my actress friend who still lives there to deliver her info (resume, headshot, etc.) to him, but more on that later. I'd like to give an overview of what Spike said, what key questions were asked and how he responded to them. After re-reading Darralynn Hutson's write up of Spike's visit to her campus in February, I've realized that he probably repeats most of the same things everywhere he goes. So keeping that in mind, here's what happened:

Spike started speaking after a rousing standing ovation from the audience speaking about how daunting it is being in college and not knowing what to do with your life. He himself wasn't very motivated and was just barely getting by academically until after his sophomore year when his mother died and he was back in Brooklyn that summer, the eldest of his siblings, with no job and no prospects. That's when he came across a camera and started filming people all over New York City. Obviously, he started filming and never stopped. His greatest inspiration and teacher in college was a professor at Clark Atlanta University and stressed that if you have a teacher or professor you think is great you should tell them. He also stressed the importance of doing what you love and not just what you think will make you the most money.

Back when he decided to become a filmmaker the only notable black filmmaker was Michael Schultz. However, Spike comes from a long line of family members who have respect for and nurture artistic gifts starting with his great great grandmother who was born enslaved but went on to graduate from Spelman and become an art teacher. He continued stressing that education is key particularly for people of color, but that it's just as important to have parental support. If we don't nurture our children's artistic gifts, he asserted, the world won't get to experience these gifts and you'll have adults who resent their parents for following their "formula" rather than pursuing what makes them happy.

(Note: If you go to see Spike somewhere, don't take pictures or record him with your phone or you risk him dressing you down as he did one man in the front row saying "I dont wanna put you on blast", but then Spike did exactly that.)

There were some questions that Spike answered during his Q&A that may be of interest to S&A readers as well:

On Go Brazil Go!

- A woman asked if Spike would be tackling Brazil's racial and social inequality in this piece he's supposed to start shooting next month (perhaps she's an S&A reader as well) and I thought he kind of hedged in his response. He said that Go Brazil Go! will cover Brazil's rise to economic prominence from the eyes of an outsider-- himself. He talked about how a lot of things were coming up that will showcase Brazil on a global level such as the World Cup and the Olympics and that he was approached by Brazilians to do this film. He did not directly answer whether the film would tackle social and racial inequality in Brazil. Instead he divulged how he's had some of the greatest times of his life in Brazil like when he shot They Don't Really Care About Us with Michael Jackson there. He provided a couple of MJ anecdotes and a short impersonation of MJ's "falsetto" voice and his "serious/angry" voice. It was funny. I don't know if he actually hedged on this answer because the film will be a touristy piece showcasing Brazil or if it will actually broach the subject of inequality, but he got distracted by his MJ anecdote.

On A New MJ Tribute Film

- Spike announced that he recently began filming a piece for the 25th anniversary of Michael Jackson's Bad album.

On Tyler Perry

- When first asked what he thought about Tyler Perry, Spike responded "Next question." And everyone laughed. He later complimented Perry when responding to another question saying, "his business sense is tremendous [...] but we as a community are more multidimensional" than what's portrayed in his movies.

His Most Favorite Recent Movie

- Attack the Block

On Why Black Movies Aren't More Reflective of Who We Are As a People

- Here Spike talked a lot about "gatekeepers". Gatekeepers are a select group of people who decide what films will be made and which ones won't. People who can greenlight projects have the votes for films and networks and those people aren't black. They make the decisions by looking at who's in it, how much it will cost and how much it will make. Marketers have much more power than they did before. If they don't think they can market it, they won't make it, hence George Lucas's Red Tails fiasco. With the exception of one black woman at FOX, there are no people of color with a vote hence, you get movies like Soul Plane.

On How He Scouts Talent

- Spike likes actors who are naturals and don't try to "act". In many of his early films, he cast people who were relatively unknown and hadn't acted that much like Halle Berry and Mekhi Phifer. He met Rosie Perez at a party in LA and he thought she talked funny and was cool. Much of the cast of Red Hook Summer do not have a background in acting. Having said this, he will most likely not be responsive if you hand him a headshot, resume, etc. It is like kryptonite to him which is why I felt a little awkward when my friend asked me to hand him her info. Luckily she was able to make the end of the show so that she could try and give it to him herself and we both stood and waited for the blow as he swiftly rejected her. He was polite and made small talk at first, but as soon as she said the words "my headshots" he went "Oh." and turned and strolled off doing his cool man stroll" (he has a sort of strut thing that he does).

All in all, I came away with my respect and admiration for him remaining unchanged. He followed his dream and is living it. I just hope he keeps the rawness and authenticity he's been known for.

Pepsi Partners With Michael Jackson Estate for Commemorative Packaging
Limited-Edition Package Coincides With 25th Anniversary of 'Bad'
By: Natalie Zmuda Published: March 30, 2012

Pepsi is paying homage to the King of Pop one more time.
The brand is working with Michael Jackson's estate to create a limited-edition package featuring the singer, according to an executive close to the company. The package coincides with the 25th Anniversary of the "Bad" album, which was released on Aug. 31, 1987.

The package will be a 16 oz. can available in convenience stores and grocery stores around Memorial Day, according to Beverage Digest. The can, said to have a blue background with an image of Mr. Jackson dancing, is expected to cost 99 cents. Pepsi declined to comment.

Pepsi sponsored the 1988 Bad World Tour. The tour spanned 16 months, with 123 concerts in 15 countries attended by 4.4 million fans. It was the largest-grossing tour in history and the one with the largest audience.

The brand's relationship with Mr. Jackson dates to 1984 and the "New Generation" campaign. The singer's hair caught fire during a commercial shoot that was part of that campaign. Mr. Jackson appeared in a number of ads for the brand over the years, performing versions of "Billie Jean" and "Bad," among other songs.

Pepsi has a long association with music but has been emphasizing it in the past year. It poured $60 million into a sponsorship of "X Factor," Simon Cowell's music competition, and featured the show's winner, Melanie Amaro, in a Super Bowl spot. The tagline for the ad, created by TBWA/Chiat/Day was "Where there's Pepsi, there's music."

Earlier this week, Pepsi confirmed to Ad Age its relationship with singer Nicki Minaj, who is said to be appearing in a new global campaign for the brand.

Pepsi Teams With Nicki Minaj, Preps Michael Jackson Project With Skrillex, Diplo
by Andrew Hampp, N.Y.  |   April 30, 2012 5:15 EDT

Pepsi has unveiled a new multiyear global marketing campaign, complete with a new tagline -- "Live for Now" -- and commercials featuring the biggest names in music. First up in the campaign is Nicki Minaj, whose 2010 single "Moment for Life" acts as soundtrack for the ad, out May 7.

It's a deal that will make Minaj a worldwide spokeswoman and also give her enough fodder to fuel two songs' worth of material on her sophomore album, "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.

"Nicki has momentum. She's a maverick," Frank Cooper, PepsiCo chief marketing officer of global consumer engagement, told Billboard in this week's cover story. "She represents the kind of artist who's in the moment, making things happen on her own terms."

As first reported by Ad Age, Pepsi is also prepping a campaign in mid-May around the 25th-anniversary of Michael Jackson's "Bad." Billboard has learned the program will include a series of remixes from superstar DJs -- Skrillex, Diplo and A-Trak are among the names mentioned to be connected with the project. The exclusive tracks are set to be accessed through a special Pepsi-can promotion where fans can scan a code with their phone to hear a song.

Jackson, of course, famously struck a ground-breaking, multifaceted endorsement/sponsorship deal with Pepsi in 1983, and was also infamously burned by an accidental fire during a 1984 commercial shoot.

Pepsi's chief rival, Coca-Cola, recently announced the launch of "Move to the Beat," one of the brand's largest ad campaigns to date, created to support its sponsorship of the 2012 London Olympic Games. Find out more about the revived "Cola Wars" in the latest issue of Billboard and read an excerpt on Billboard.biz.

Major: Pepsi Prep Michael Jackson ‘Bad’ 25th Anniversary Campaign

t’s been 3 years since Michael Jackson‘s passing, yet the King of Pop’s commercial viability shows no sign of slowing.

For, in what is being hailed as yet another master stroke by Jackson’s Estate, it has today been confirmed that the singer’s brand will once again by endorsed by Pepsi – almost 30 years after their first outing.

According to Billboard, the drinks juggernaut will roll out a special-line of cans featuring the superstar’s image this May in honor of the 25th anniversary of his third solo album ‘Bad’. The cans will, most importantly, feature codes that -when redeemed online- will “unlock” exclusive ‘Bad’ remixes from the likes of Diplo and Skrillex.

The set, which hit stores on August 31st 1987, is one of the greatest selling albums of all-time, having shifted over 45 million copies worldwide (10.5 million in the US), and spawning a whopping five #1 singles on the Hot 100.

Jackson’s previous collaborations with Pepsi include the ill-fated 1984 commercial which saw his scalp set on fire, and sponsorships of his solo tours in 1988 and 1992.

**********

Needless to say, this serves as yet another testament to Michael’s unparalleled and enduring impact. An impact which should sell a potent message to the stars of today: strive for a brand of greatness that will outlive you. More than any charting or award, that is the ultimate success.

Michael Jackson's 'Bad' to be remixed by Skrillex, Diplo
Published Tuesday, May 1 2012, 12:41 BST | By Lewis Corner

Michael Jackson's Bad is to be remixed by Skrillex and Diplo as part of a new Pepsi project.

The beverage brand has commissioned the electronic producers to rework Jackson's iconic album to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

A-Trak has also been signed to the project, which will see exclusive remixed tracks become available to download with code from cans of Pepsi, reports Billboard.

Jackson began a revolutionary multifaceted endorsement and sponsorship deal with Pepsi in 1983.

The deal led to the infamous fire accident on set of a commercial shoot the following year.

It was recently suggested that Michael Jackson could travel with a re-united Jackson 5 as a hologram on a future world tour.

BRUCE SWEDIEN TALKS ABOUT DONT BE MESSIN AROUND
By Mark Coleman in Los Angeles 2:12PM BST 04 Jul 2009

Bruce Swedien revealed the singer had completed a powerful track entitled Don't Be Messin' Around.

Featuring what was described as a mesmerising solo performance, it is expected to be available to millions of fans once the terms of Jackson's estate are settled.

Mr Swedien said of the ballad: "Michael plays piano on it, and it's just beautiful." He added: "Oh my God, there's nothing like it."

The possibility of new Jackson music has been one of the most hotly-debated topics since his death.
It has been reported that hundreds of tracks could be available to fans, including lyrics Jackson wrote during the build-up to his planned European tour.

But there has been no substantiation to the rumours until now.

EXCLUSIVE: SINGLE & UNRELEASED SONG TO KICK-START THE #BAD25 CAMPAIGN

By Damien Shields | Monday 7 May, 2012

Twenty-five years ago, Michael Jackson released what went on to become one of the most successful albums in music history. Boasting five consecutive #1 singles (the first ever album to achieve this feat) in the U.S and selling in excess of 35 million copies worldwide, BAD shines as brightly today as it did when it was released.

The Michael Jackson Estate recently announced a marketing strategy to place Jackson’s image in the hands of millions of cola consumers around the world, striking a deal with PepsiCo to promote the “Bad 25” campaign on one billion Pepsi cans. Customers will be able to access exclusive remixes of the iconic tunes from the BAD album by scanning a special code embedded on the can with their smartphone.

The latest news is that throughout the month of June, Sony will re-issue Jackson’s 1987 hit single “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” around the world on CD and vinyl, as well as in digital formats for promotional purposes. As I exclusively revealed via Twitter yesterday, the “maxi single” will also include an unreleased track from Jackson’s archives called “Don’t Go Messin’ Round” – a song which has long been know about by Jackson fanatics, but has never been heard.

Bruce Swedien, Jackson’s long time studio engineer whom recorded Jackson’s vocals spoke about the song, which he referred to as a “powerful” and “mesmerizing” ballad in a 2009 interview.

“Michael plays piano on it, and it's just beautiful … Oh my God, there's nothing like it." – Bruce Swedien

The BAD album will also be re-issued to mark its 25th anniversary following the release of the maxi single. The re-issue is set to feature the eleven original tracks, plus never-before heard material that did not make the cut back in 1987.

Jackson is notorious for having over-recorded during album sessions, laying down vocals for more songs than he could fit on an individual album, then selecting the cream of the crop for the eventual release.

“Michael had written 33 songs [for Bad], and [the record label] were saying ‘it’s showdown time, we gotta pick it’ … This was time to take it home and deliver – no more messing around. You can’t put 33 songs on a record. And he’d written some fantastic stuff, ya know, really, really fantastic! I remember [the song] Streetwalker. Michael liked Streetwalker and I wanted to [include the song] Another Part Of Me.” – Quincy Jones

Jackson and Jones invited Jackson’s then manager Frank Dileo to join them in the studio to listen to the two songs objectively to decide which would be included on the album. Dileo sat as he listened to Streetwalker, but got up and started dancing to Another Part Of Me. And with that, the decision was made.

“There are a couple of songs we recorded for the Bad album that we had to cut that are just sensational.” – Frank Dileo

Streetwalker, along with another track that didn’t make the cut, called “Fly Away”, were later included on the BAD Special Edition (2001).

Also in the works right now is the hotly anticipated DVD/Blu-ray release showcasing the second leg of Jackson’s 1988 Bad World Tour, a commemorative documentary about the BAD era produced by Spike Lee, as well as a series of promotional events. The 1988 Bad Tour concert footage specifically is something that fans have long wished would be released, even well before Jackson’s passing.

Additional singles to promote the re-issue of the BAD album are part of the plans, too. The record label is yet to settle on whether they’ll re-release any of the original tracks from the BAD album with their corresponding short films, or go with unreleased tracks as singles instead.

The “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You/Don’t Go Messin’ Round” maxi single is available for pre-order now, online via Amazon.com. The CD version is due out in early June, with the vinyl edition coming at later that month. Release dates may vary depending on which country you are in.

Bad 25 follows a series of outstanding accomplishments for the Michael Jackson Estate including the record-breaking "This Is It" film and soundtrack, "Immortal" album and touring show produced by Cirque Du Soleil and a dramatic recovery of Jackson's financial affairs. Despite these successful posthumous ventures, the December 2010 release of the "Michael" album caused major controversy with Jackson's family and dedicated fan base. Three tracks on the album are widely believed to contain an impersonator's vocals fraudulently attributed to Jackson.

New York, NY – Twenty-five years after the phrase “Who’s Bad” became a generation’s cultural catchphrase, Epic/Legacy Recordings, in collaboration with the Estate of Michael Jackson, will celebrate the legendary album and record breaking BAD tour on September 18, 2012 with the release of a deluxe package, BAD 25, which includes three CDs, two collectible booklets, and features the first ever authorized DVD release of a concert from the record breaking BAD tour.

“The era of BAD represented Michael’s creative ‘coming of age’ as a solo artist in charge of every aspect of his career – from recording to touring to endorsements to merchandising. This was the first album on which nearly all of the songs were written by Michael. It was also was the first album in history to produce five consecutive #1 singles and it took 2 ½ decades for another artist to match that success. It was also the first time Michael would tour as a solo artist - his vision, his decisions on what the show would be. The enormous success of the BAD album and tour was a pivotal moment in Michael’s growth as a composer, performer and producer
cementing his role as the King of Pop. We are thrilled to celebrate such an historic era in Michael’s career with this release”, stated John Branca and John McClain, Co-Executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson.

The BAD 25 anniversary deluxe edition will feature three CDs and 1 DVD as follows:

The highlight of the package is the DVD of Michael’s legendary July 16, 1988 concert at Wembley Stadium. The concert is not a compilation of performances, but rather one complete show, exactly as Michael performed it for Prince Charles, Princess Diana and the 72,000 fans who were in the audience for that night’s sold out show. This show was one of the record-breaking seven nights played at the venue attended by more than half a million people – three times that many people tried to purchase tickets. The DVD was sourced from Michael Jackson’s personal VHS copy of the performance as shown on the JumboTrons during the concert. This footage was only recently unearthed and is the only known copy of the show to exist. The visuals have been restored and the audio quality  enhanced so that fans can share in the excitement of that famous night

This material includes early demo versions of songs from the album as well as demos for songs not included on the final album. In addition, this CD will also include new remixes from internationally renowned DJ/producers

This magnificent 3 CD/1 DVD box set will also include two extensive booklets with yet unseen photos from the recording sessions, video sets and the concert tour, the original BAD cover art, a two-sided poster and more. A BAD 25 two CD standard edition featuring the original album plus the CD of demos and new remixes will also be made available as will a stand alone edition of the DVD and a picture disc of the original album.

On June 5 in the U.S. (June 4th ex-U.S.), Epic / Legacy Recordings will re-release the original first single from the album "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" as a CD Single with a previously unreleased bonus track from the BAD sessions, "Don't Be Messin' 'Round (demo)." This is a Wal-Mart exclusive CD single in the U.S. and will not be available digitally.

On June 26 a replica edition of the original 7" vinyl of this single with the original B-side "Baby Be Mine" will be made available to the world. The first single for BAD, “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” was originally released on 7" vinyl in 1987. The 7" single edit of the song has only been available on that original 7" vinyl until now.

Recently, Pepsi announced an exclusive global partnership with the Estate of Michael Jackson as part of its new “Live for Now” campaign. Starting this month, Michael Jackson and Pepsi fans in more than 20 countries around the world will experience this partnership in a variety of ways, including a retail campaign featuring one billion special edition Michael Jackson Bad 25 Pepsi cans, live events, and opportunities for fans to access special edition merchandise and new music
from BAD 25.

The BAD album was the third Michael Jackson album produced by Quincy Jones and was originally released on August 31, 1987. It was monumental in many ways; Michael wrote nine of the album's eleven tracks and received co-producer credit for the entire album. The album was #1 around the world, made history with five consecutive #1 singles on the Billboard chart, produced ten chart-topping singles, nine ground breaking short films and to date, the Bad album has generated over 45 Million units in sales. BAD was nominated for six Grammys and won two; the album earned Michael the first-ever Video Vanguard Award at the MTV VMA Awards.

Songs on the original album are: “Bad,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Speed Demon,” “Liberian Girl,” “Just Good Friends” featuring Stevie Wonder, “Another Part of Me,” “Man in the Mirror,” “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Dirty Diana,” “Smooth Criminal,” with “Leave Me Alone” added to the album once released.

The BAD World Tour was Michael’s first concert tour as a solo artist. The legendary tour included 123 concerts attended by more than 4.4 million fans over sixteen months. When it concluded, the tour had shattered all previous touring records for attendance and total gross revenue adding three new entries in the Guinness World Records for the largest grossing tour in history, the tour with the largest attended audience and the most sold out shows at Wembley
Stadium. More details on this and other exciting projects relating to BAD’s 25th anniversary will be announced soon.
